research

In my project moving rhythms I work at the interface of dance, body percussion and theatre. The source material is my body, the materiality of my clothes, floor, walls and space. Other contributors are my voice, my ears and the acoustic world that surrounds me. Specific interests of my research are:

1. investigating visual and aural sounds and bringing them into a playful synesthesia with each other. How can movement sound and become “audible”?

2. integrating movements that are not completely guided / controllable (off – balance, momentum, letting go and dropping) into a tight groove / pattern and finding precision in it.

3. How many sounds / voices can I overlap with my body in a groove?

There are very guided sounds, such as clapping, and there are sounds of movements that cannot be fully controlled. These dynamic sounds arise for example in the letting go of parts of the body. My aim is to integrate these not completely guided (according to Laban not bound but free flow) movements into a clocked groove/pattern and to find precision in it. The floor and the walls play an important role here. They become as valuable percussion platforms for me as my body itself.

synesthesia

While dance normally appeals to the senses of seeing and music primarily to the senses of hearing, I want to mix sensory impressions through movement and rhythm. The motto of the International Body Music Festival “See music, hear dance” gets to the heart of synesthesia. A beat, such as a stomp, has an acoustic sound produced by the clash of the two surfaces. If I understand the air around me as a surface, how does my movement sound? Can it become “audible”? And how does the movement before, during and after an “audible” impulse, change the music that is created? I am interested in understanding movement as a visual sound and making it audible.

moving rhythms as theatrical expression

As part of my research, and especially for the upcoming production interr_options, I am working on the scenic potential of moving rhythms.

I am exploring how body percussion and movement can be used to communicate, create moods, convey content and conflicts… to perform!

workshops

At Moving Rhythms, we make music with our bodies. Starting with movement, we explore a variety of sounds. We invent and learn rhythms and play in an ensemble, in multiple voices or in canon. We work on coordination, mobility and musicality. We also play with the scenic potential of rhythm: how can we communicate through rhythm? The possibilities of physical theatre make poetry and comedy obvious. We practice relaxing in the face of challenges and getting into the game together. We will fail with joy and groove! Moving Rhythms is for anyone who enjoys rhythm and movement and can be adapted to a wide range of target groups.

I offer lessons and workshops for a wide range of target groups, e.g. in the following contexts:

– Open workshops for participants
– Workshop for physical theatre and dance – students at Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen
– Course for EMP master’s students at the University of Music, Freiburg
– For independent theatre groups
– At the Free Drama School, Freiburg
– Professional training for dancers in Freiburg
– Weekend courses at the Forum 3 Youth Culture Centre (Stuttgart)
– Kirnhalden Summer Festival / GutAlaune Festival Halle
– at the FLINTA* Empowerment Camp Curious Creatures // Movetia
– KLONG Laboratory and performance with schoolchildren (cooperation between Mehrklang & Theater Freiburg)
– Summer course at the Accademia Dimitri
